at a glance
All settings for all three output channels can be reached at once without having to turn pages.
auto balance
Changing a slider will automatically re-adjust the output channel's other two sliders so that the sum of all three remains 100%. In order for this to work, the "lock" settings for all three sliders have to be unchecked.
lock option
The auto balance feature can be locked for each single slider ("lock" checkbox checked). If all three sliders are locked, like in the figure above for the red output channel, then their behavior is similar to Photoshop's.
overflow warning
If the sum of a triple of sliders differs from 100% this is displayed as an overflow (positive or negative). Such differences can occur if one or more sliders are locked or if one of the unlocked sliders is already at its limit.
fixing colors
Clicking with the right mouse button into the preview window fixes the current gray interpretation of the selected color. All following changes will not affect the fixed color.
constant
Other than in Photoshop the setting of this slider actually flows into the result as a percentage value (relative to the original RGB values). Therefore it is possible to counter-balance an overflow by choosing its negative value as constant.
gamma slider
This additional slider modifies the overall brightness of the image. It changes the image's gamma value and therefore mainly the mid-tones, leaving black and white points untouched.
gray option
If this checkbox is checked all colors will be translated into gray values. This option is similar to the "monochrome" setting in Photoshop's channel mixer.
bilingual
A mouse click changes the language between german and english.

Conversion by luminance
By standard, the weightings of the RGB colors flowing into the grayscale image are set to what I call "luminance mode". This conversion scheme, originally developed for television, corresponds very well to the way we perceive color brightness. Red flows into the brightness of the grayscale image by 30%, green by 59% and blue by 11%.

With SF TransluSense you can make a certain color area transparent by mouse click or with three pairs of color sliders - also with smooth transitions - or you can turn the brightness of the colors completely into transparency. Vice versa, available transparency can be weakened to your likings or removed completely or converted into a transparency mask.

Transparency makes pixels totally or partly transparent and makes numerous creative picture effects possible. With the help of transparency, parts of images can be isolated and mounted on a new background. Transparency makes edges of montages invisible, creates soft transitions between foreground and background and between different picture elements. This plugin provides a 3D visualization of all colors in an image. Colors are represented as RGB-values, hence each color corresponds to a point in color space. Histograms, although useful, represent only projections of the full 3D color distribution, hence important subtleties may remain hidden. The Color Cube plugin helps in detecting color clipping etc.

Color Cube lets you select a rectangular region or the entire image to be analyzed. You can spin the color cube and view it from any angle you want. You can also select the background color. This filter performs perspective transformations. Flat images can be tilted e.g. to create 3D compositions. Similarly, images taken at an angle can be rectified (e.g. tall buildings). You can rotate the image with the mouse or using sliders around three axes, then reposition and resize it. Grid lines can be displayed both before and after transformation.

The new Version 7 allows to set control points in the preview image. The plugin evaluates these control points and sets the slider values accordingly to rectify the image. 1. What is Shared Picture Map and what does that mean to the QuarkXPress user?

Shared Picture Map is a QuarkXPress XTension and Apple Aperture/iPhoto plugin. It enables a QuarkXPress user to export previews and layout geometry as a zip archive which could be manually sent to Aperture/iPhoto user. Aperture/iPhoto user works on their images and chooses �QuarkXPress Project� during export process. Aperture/iPhoto plugin allows user to open the zip archive and drag drop selected images into layout boxes. Note that QuarkXPress application is not required to open zip archive. Zip archive is updated with image information and could be sent back to QuarkXPress user to update originial QuarkXPress project file. All this while QuarkXPress user could keep working on layout as well.
Shared Image Map allows layout and image artists to collaborate on a project simultaneously. A QuarkXPress user can now delegate image work right at the start of project work and continue working without waiting for finished images to come back.

2. What inspired you to develop this solution?

Normally users are forced to use file sharing to exchange files to work together. Naming conventions are typically used to enable project management and versioning. Lastly image artists have no way of knowing how their images are coming along in the finished pages. Both QuarkXPress and Aperture application tend to focus on workflow. This project aims to ease common workflow a bit without investing in a content management system.

3. Who do you see as the target audience for this solution?

Designers who are part of a workflow involving both QuarkXPress and Aperture. Ideal workflow would be where designers need to start exchanging graphic files earlier in the process without much planning.

4. If this feature is developed further, what would you like to see added?

I would like to see more tighter integration with Aperture. Currently Aperture SDK only allow export plugin. One could imagine native QuarkXPress project files as album artwork within Aperture. This would allow hi-fidelity, design rich albums based on industry standard QuarkXPress platform. Next I would like to use Quark�s Job Jacket technology to share assets between the 2 applications. Assets may include color, image formats, image resolution, type styles, page information and such. Quark�s Job Jacket technology would allow image preflight check right within Aperture. Last but the not the least I would like to hear from the community how they would like to see it developed.

Xactuell allows you to link text parts, text and picture boxes with content of the database. Frames or text parts are linked to the database through a query and a reference value (e.g. product number). These links can be updated in a bidirectional manner, i.e. the documents can be updated with new database contents, while changed document contents can also be written back into the database. Xactuell works with all common databases such as FileMaker, Access, Sybase, Oracle or also Excel and simple text files. However, Xactuell can also be used without any SQL or database knowledge.
In a document, e.g. prices, texts or pictures for which links have been created may be updated at any time with new data from the database. Xactuell lets you create and manage links from an InDesign document to a database. It supports all common databases. An iBase database is even included.
Links to a database can be set from text selections in the text body, from text boxes and picture boxes.

Once the links between the document and the database have been set, the linked prices, texts and pictures in the document can be updated at any time. The database is queried with standard or user-defined SQL queries. The update can either cover the entire document, or refer to certain selected page areas or queries only.
